Kitchen cabinet painting has limitations though
We’ll be honest, painting kitchen cabinets, though capable of making a breath-taking transformation, is not right for everyone.
- First, a complete kitchen remodel or completely new cabinets will allow for a redesign of the kitchen layout that painting alone can’t achieve. This can be the preferred option if you’re seeking more storage, for example.
- Painting can’t solve structural problems either. If cabinets are warped, damaged, or have structural issues, painting won’t solve these problems. They will need to be replaced by a reputable custom cabinet maker to ensure your cabinets are sturdy and long-lasting.
- And at times, we’ve come across cabinets we couldn’t work with because a previous paint job was done so poorly that the surfaces were not worth the expense to repair them. We’ll be honest if that’s the case with yours. We’ll never paint over something that will leave you with terrible results.
Ultimately, however, painting your kitchen cabinets is an ideal solution for most San Jose homeowners while providing a beautiful, cost-effective transformation without the need for a full replacement.
We don’t just paint kitchen cabinets. We can also paint your bathroom vanities, entertainment centers, and built-in cabinetry to give your San Jose home a whole new look. to

Steps we take so your cabinets get sleek, smooth finishes
- We remove and number all doors and take them to our shop. A heavy degreaser is used to clean them and remove all dirt and grim.
- Both sides of doors are sanded with an orbital sander.
- The appropriate primer is then sprayed on doors to seal them.
- Doors are then sanded and prepped again.
- First coat of a premium paint is sprayed.
- Final coat of paint is sprayed.
- During the door process, frames go through a slightly different progression. Degreased, sanded and prepped. Hand brushed with two coats of premium paint.
- Doors are brought back to the site and reassembled.

Cabinet Painting FAQs
The last painter did a terrible job. The paint is lumpy. Can I repaint?
I’m so sorry to hear that. Unfortunately it’s not uncommon. Painting wood cabinets requires a lot of prep to get a smooth finish, and not all painters want to spend the time, nor do homeowners want the expense.
To answer your question, I’ve seen some finishes that were not repairable, or at least, it would have been cheaper to replace the cabinets. That’s pretty extreme though.
I can’t answer this question here without seeing the condition. If you’re in Santa Clara County, please give me a call and I will let you know. Otherwise, please call a local cabinet painter.
Can I go back to a wood stain if I don't like the paint?
Because of what’s involved to remove the paint, in most cases the answer is no unless you replace the doors and draw fronts too.
What is the biggest mistake cabinet painters make?
I don’t even have to think about this question. The answer is in the prep. The paint must stick and it must be smooth. You can’t achieve either one without proper prep. See the first question here.
Here at Jennifer Davis Painting, we prioritize the prep because we want you happy with the results and we want the paint to last for a very long time. It comes with a cost, but we do believe it’s cheaper to do it right the first time, than to have to go back and do it all over again later because it doesn’t hold up and looks terrible.
Why paint my cabinets when I can just replace?
I believe we answered that question on this page already, but to summarize:
- It’s cheaper to paint cabinets than replace;
- There is no need to replace unless you want to change the layout of your kitchen;
- If you want a different look, you can achieve that by just replacing the doors and drawer fronts rather than replacing the entire cabinet.
- There is less waste and therefor more environmentally friendly.
What will it cost to paint my cabinets?
Cost is generally determined by square footage and the amount of prep work required. It’s quick and easy to get a quote. Just text us using our “live text”, submit the form or give us a call. In just a few minutes we can give you a range. If that works for you, we may want to come and evaluate on site.
