Wallpaper Removal FAQs
Can you paint over wallpaper?
Some wallpaper can be painted over if it was hung correctly in the first place and it’s smooth, as in no bubbles or peeling. It’s always best to remove it though, and if it was hung correctly, it’s not that hard to remove. It can be time consuming though.
Here at Jennifer Davis Painting, we have developed a method that makes fast work of wallpaper removal. Call for a quote before you try painting over it. You may be surprised.
If I decide to paint over it, what's the best method?
If you decide to paint over your wallpaper, then we recommend you oil seal everything. After that, mud and sand, then oil seal again. After that you can paint as normal.
How do you prepare the wall for paint after wallpaper removal?
When you remove wallpaper it can still leave water-based glue on the wall. It might also leave the paper backing. Either one of those will absorb the water in your latex paint. This can cause bubbles and peeling. This can go on forever.
To prevent that you must apply a special primer such as Gardz.
Before that, though, you’ll want to do repair and smooth rough surfaces and imperfections as you would any way before paint or texture.
What does it cost to remove wallpaper?
That depends on who does it and the number of square feet. Some wallpaper removal calculators estimate that to remove wallpaper on 125 sq. ft. in the San Jose area can cost between $500 and $1000. Jennifer Davis Painting is almost always on the low end because of the method we have developed. Please call for a quote. We usually respond within the hour if not immediately.
Can I put new wallpaper over the old?
We don’t recommend it, but we’ve seen it done. You’ll need to follow the same steps for painting over wallpaper. We recommend using an oil-based sealer to prevent the water-based glue on the new paper from penetrating the old and causing it to buckle.
Is wallpaper out of date?
Depends on who you ask, and it depends on the style of wallpaper. We googled it, and designers are definitely saying to go for it. Here is what may be trending:
